Project Name:
Guidebook on Water Sensitive and Climate Resilient Infrastructure Solutions for Municipalities in Laos and Cambodia
Location:
Vientiane, Oudomxay, Savannakhet (Laos)
Year of Completion:
Sector:
Water Infrastructure and Climate Resilience
Project Summary
This project addresses the urgent water management challenges faced by rapidly urbanizing municipalities in Laos and Cambodia. With urbanization rates expected to reach 44% in Cambodia and 47.7% in Laos by 2030, secondary and tertiary cities struggle with inadequate drainage systems, flooding, and water scarcity during droughts. The project has developed a comprehensive guidebook that catalogs affordable, sustainable, and low-maintenance water infrastructure solutions tailored to the specific needs of municipalities in both countries.
Working in partnership with BORDA, Rgen and Sevea Consulting have identified, analyzed, and documented 12 climate-resilient water infrastructure solutions for flood risk mitigation, drought management, and coastal protection. Each solution was evaluated using a multi-criteria approach that prioritizes economic viability, low complexity, sustainability, climate change adaptation benefits, and socioeconomic benefits.
Key Objectives
-
Identify and assess the most pressing water-sensitive infrastructure management challenges in Cambodian and Laotian municipalities
-
Evaluate current responses to water management issues at national and municipal levels
-
Provide municipal authorities with technical guidance on appropriate, low-tech, and affordable water infrastructure solutions
-
Create a practical, actionable guidebook that enables municipalities to implement climate-resilient water infrastructure
